View Full Version : Wetsuit vs drysuit for newer divers

So, would anyone who has 'dove' with both, or currently dives with both care to share their opinions?
I have heard newer divers should start in a wetsuit and gain buoyancy control and trim first (as it is easier in a wetsuit), then move into a drysuit later. This might make a bit of sense as the wetsuit, if it takes any damage, is much easier and cheaper to fix.
Personally, I love diving dry simply for the ease of getting dressed/undressed compared to a wetsuit.
Your thoughts..................?????

I have started diving wet as often as possible. A nice, good fitting wetsuit isn't that hard to get into and out of and I find is much more comfortable and free under water. I probably gain 5-10% more bottom time in a wetsuit, (cave diving, vs flow) simply because it is more streamlined.
That and drysuits leak... :)

I've only dove wet, so I don't meet Bill's criteria for posting, but I'll inflict my views anyway. :D
I went wet instead of dry when a relatively new diver because of $$$. Now, I sometimes think I should have gone dry for a longer season and greater comfort, but of course now I've already stuck with it and maintained an interest for a few years which wasn't obvious back then. Also, none of the regular buddies have dry suits either, so season extension wouldn't have been as easy anyway.

I dive both wet and dry. I prefer to dive wet, but I get cold easily so I use my drysuit more often. I bought my first drysuit a few months after I got certified so I could extend my dive season, and it was great. I also know a couple of people who got certified in drysuits and preferred it that way.
The big thing is that new divers don't want to spend a lot on a drysuit before they get their OW cert because what if they don't end up liking diving? I suppose if drysuit rentals were available it would make it easier to start diving dry right from the start.
