Reposted from Facebook:

I just learned that my good friend, dive buddy, mentor and instructor, Ken Smith of Osgoode, Ont., died in North Carolina last Tuesday during his annual dive vacation.

Ken was a careful and skilled diver; I had the pleasure of diving with him many times in Bonaire, Canada, and North Carolina, and in the last couple of years did several memorable dives off his boat. He was also a gifted instructor; he trained both Valerie and I as Master Divers, and was a principal instructor when Marie and I did our Instructor’s Certification. He was a demanding in the classroom, and inevitably required that we do at least twice as many dives and research projects as the NAUI standards demanded. It became a joke around Burton's: “If you want to get certified fast, take the course from anyone but Ken. If you want to get certified right, take it from Ken.”

It’s never a good time to leave, but I am glad at least that Ken left us while doing what he loved best. Thank you, Ken, for everything you did for Valerie and me, for Burton’s, and for diving. You will be remembered and missed by all of us whose lives you changed.
