Valerie and I spent a good chunk of last weekend at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, a truly wondrous facility. We were there as part of a conference, and got to go "backstage" at several of the exhibits. There were many memorable bits - whale sharks! Beluga! A full, artificially grown and populated coral reef! - but my favourite moment came when a guide was explaining Damselfish protogyny to a tour group.
Guide: "Most of these schools have only one male. And if the male gets killed, one of the females will transform into a male within hours."
Guest: "How do they do that?"
Guide: "No-one's sure. It's just that all of a sudden, they stop asking for directions."
